You certainly have heard the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are every bit as bad since they are extremely inquisitive and are often in the habit of going places and getting into stuff that they shouldn't. Although this doesn't always end badly, they oftentimes do end up hurting themselves by some means so it's a wise decision to be aware of some dog first aid.

Somewhere around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to find a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and chose to play in it for awhile. By the time she came back to the house the burrs had worked themselves firmly into places on her face, her ears and her little behind.

It was nighttime so the Vet was closed and a trip to the animal hospital would certainly have been very costly. So she was subjected to my tearful yet laughing efforts as I managed to one by one manipulate those burrs out of her hair as she struggled and yelped for at least two hours. They were matted so badly and close up to the skin that cutting them out was not an alternative.

A tranquilizer of some sort would have been ideal but I didn't have anything at all for her. And since there was no blood or major injury, visiting the emergency hospital was not necessary ... that time.

That is a sad yet comical story to share and hopefully an experience she has not remembered over time. It was also a little thing although very painful and stressful for both of us. But it might have been even worse.

As a responsible dog owner you will need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more life-threatening emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet expenses for minor problems like the one I had. But you might also feel the need to help ease your dog's pain or carry out life-saving actions until you can reach the Vet.

Having a dog first aid kit is undeniably a good thing but you also need to know how to handle things in a true emergency. Always have phone numbers handy for both your regular Vet as well as the nearest emergency animal hospital. And be sure to learn basic canine first aid yourself.
